Nutrition and the Gut Microbiome

Inside our digestive tract there live billions of bacteria that aid the body in a variety of functions — from breaking down your food and absorbing nutrients to regulating your mood. This ecosystem is called your gut microbiome, and the food we eat directly impacts the balance between the helpful bacteria and the harmful variety that are responsible for many gastrointestinal conditions. While there are some general rules for maintaining a healthy gut — like eating a variety of fruits and vegetables — most individuals require personalized support to optimize their diet for their unique gut microbiome. That’s where a registered dietitian can help.
Our Gut Health Nutrition Program is for you if you need help managing conditions like:
Irritable bowel Syndrome (IBS)/Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
Type 2 diabetes
Ulcerative colitis
Crohn's disease
Irritable bowel Syndrome (IBS)/Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
IBS and IBD are chronic digestive conditions that affect the gut, causing symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits. While IBS affects how food mores through the digestive tract, IBD is an inflammatory condition that can cause damage to the digestive tract. If you are managing IBS or IBD, you don’t have to navigate it alone. A registered dietitian can offer personalized nutrition guidance to help relieve symptoms, improve digestion, and support overall gut health. From identifying trigger foods to building a balanced, gut-friendly diet, our step-by-step program offers simple strategies, meal planning tools, and expert support to help you feel your best.

How Can Working With a Dietitian Improve My Gut Health?

Our registered dietitians are clinically trained to treat your gastrointestinal and digestion issues with nutrition. They will take into account your medical history, needs, and preferences and will develop a plan to help you reach your goals. Your personal dietitian will help you sift through the confusing and, often overwhelming, nutrition noise to find out what's best for your unique gut microbiome. Your gut health dietitian will help you create a treatment plan for conditions like Irritable bowel syndrome or disease (IBS/ IBD), Celiac disease, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), diverticulitis and other digestive issues. They also support food sensitivities and allergies. Plus, they're available on your schedule via telehealth.

Nutrition and Gut Health: What's the Connection?

Inside our digestive tract (mostly within the large intestine), there live billions of bacteria which aid the body in a variety of functions from breaking down your food and facilitating nutrient absorption to impacting hormones and mood (whoah!). This ecosystem is called your "gut microbiome". The health of your gut relies heavily on a proper balance of 'good' bacteria to 'bad' bacteria. A shift in this ratio, called "dysbiosis", can mean a variety of ill effects. For example, too much 'bad' bacteria have been linked to higher incidences of IBS/ IBD, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis, as well as Type 2 Diabetes and high blood pressure. What we eat can have a great impact on the balance within our gut — foods either promote good bacteria or not-so-good. While there are some general rules, like eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, most individuals require personalized support to determine which foods support their unique gut microbiome. Your Foodsmart dietitian is clinically trained to work with you to find what works and craft a plan specific to your needs and goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know this program will work for me?

Our Gut Health Program is led by registered dietitians who are clinically trained in medical nutrition therapy to treat all conditions — including gut related conditions — with nutrition. Unlike many "one-size-fits-all" gut health programs, we take a personalized approach to understand who you are and what you're looking to accomplish, then we develop a plan just for you.We also work on your schedule. Whether you are available to meet once a week or once a month, we'll develop a nutrition plan that supports your unique gut microbiome and your health goals.

What kinds of gut related conditions does Foodsmart support?

Unlike many programs, we're not focused on quick fixes or a one-size-fits-all approach. Our primary difference is you!Whether you've been diagnosed with IBS or IBD, Celiac, Crohn's ulcertive colitis, GERD or a number of other gut-related conditions or digestive issues — we can help. We consider your specific case, your symptoms, lifestyle, and your goals and come up with a plan that you feel great about and that puts you on the path to feeling great again.

How long is the Gut Health Program?

The gut health program can be completed in as little as 8-10 weeks, but the length of the program depends entirely on your goals and the plan you develop with your dietitian. When you meet with your dietitian, they will will work with you to adapt the program to your needs based on your health history, gut-related conditions or symptoms you are managing, and how you're progressing toward your goals over the course of the program.

How often do I meet with my dietitian?

For most members, we recommend a visit every two weeks, though you are welcome to meet more or less frequently. This cadence will give enough time to make progress and have meaningful updates. If you need support in between visits, you may always message your dietitian.
